Ecdysterone C
One small RCT showed muscle gain, but the effect is weak and has not been reproduced
Citable fact
«Ecdysterone» — evidence level C. Dosage: No single justified dose has been established. A 2019 study used several different doses of ecdysterone-containing products; the specific amounts are not detailed in the report. Source: PMID 31123801, permanent link to the source in the list below.
How it works
A phytoecdysteroid that in experiments binds to estrogen receptors and in cell culture enhances myotube hypertrophy. In humans the mechanism has not been confirmed: the data are limited to one study in 46 young men.
Dosage and intake
No single justified dose has been established. A 2019 study used several different doses of ecdysterone-containing products; the specific amounts are not detailed in the report.
There are no data on the effect of timing. In the study the product was taken daily for 10 weeks.
Forms
Ecdysterone capsules or powder, often as part of “ecdysterone-containing” mixes. There is no standardization by active substance.
What is confirmed
- In the only RCT (46 men, 10 weeks), gains in muscle mass and bench press performance were higher than without ecdysterone
- Liver and kidney toxicity biomarkers did not increase in that study
Adverse effects and limitations
- There is little data: one small study, with no independent reproduction
- The effect is modest, and products are almost not standardized for ecdysterone content
- WADA has included ecdysterone in the monitoring program: the substance is not prohibited but is under observation
- Products sold as ecdysterone are sometimes contaminated with prohibited anabolic steroids
Interactions
- There are no data on interactions with medications and other supplements
Who must not use it
- Under 18 years: Not recommended: there are no safety data, and the effect on the hormonal system has not been studied.
- Pregnancy and lactation: Not recommended: there are no safety data for pregnancy and lactation.
- history of hormone-dependent tumors
- use of drugs with hormonal action
- participation in competitions under doping control
