Chitosan B
Meta-analysis: about 1 kg over several months — practically insignificant
Citable fact
«Chitosan» — evidence level B. Dosage: In studies — 1–3 g per day in 2–3 doses before meals. A meta-analysis of RCTs noted a small reduction in body weight and improvement in lipid profile at doses of about 1–3 g/day. Source: PMID 30545156, permanent link to the source in the list below.
How it works
A polysaccharide from crustacean shells. In the stomach it binds negatively charged bile acids and part of the fat, reducing their absorption. The binding capacity in the human body is limited and does not affect a large amount of fat in the diet.
Dosage and intake
In studies — 1–3 g per day in 2–3 doses before meals. A meta-analysis of RCTs noted a small reduction in body weight and improvement in lipid profile at doses of about 1–3 g/day.
30 minutes before a meal 2–3 times a day — binding of fat from the food consumed is assumed; there are no data on an advantage of a specific time.
Forms
Chitosan capsules, often with vitamin C or as part of fat-burner complexes. The degree of deacetylation and molecular weight in products are not standardized.
What is confirmed
- 2018 meta-analysis of RCTs: a small but statistically significant reduction in body weight and improvement in lipid and blood pressure measures
- The absolute effect size is about 1 kg over several months, which is not perceived as a result
- In people with shellfish allergy, applicability is limited by reactions to the product
Adverse effects and limitations
- Shellfish allergy — an absolute contraindication
- Gas, bloating, constipation and nausea at doses from 3 g per day
- Reduces the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and drugs when taken together
- Part of the effect is explained by GI side effects and reduced appetite rather than fat loss
Interactions
- May reduce the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, K and oral drugs
- Affects vitamin K status, which matters when taking warfarin and other anticoagulants
Who must not use it
- Under 18 years: Not recommended.
- Pregnancy and lactation: Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation: there are no safety data, and an effect on nutrient absorption is undesirable.
- allergy to crustaceans and mollusks
- malabsorption
- warfarin use
- fat-soluble vitamin deficiency
